Care Centre for Children - Community of Bantala - Kolkata
The community of Bantala consists of very poor and small villages in the southeastern region of Kolkata, on the outskirts of the city. Located around a wetland area, this community is one of the poorest in the city. The main work sources in Bantala are fish farms and agriculture but work is extremely precarious and family incomes normally do not exceed 60-80 rupees a day (about one Euro). Alcohol and drugs use, domestic violence and a lack of motivation for education are some of the main problems in this area.
ME IMPORTAS, along with the local counterpart DEVELOPMENT ACTION SOCIETY (D.A.S.) (Indian non-profit organization which has more than twenty years of experience in the area), manages a Care Centre for Children in Bantala, a centre that provides the community the following services:
- Pre-School Education.
- School Canteen.
- An inclusion and supervision programme in the national primary cycle.
- Children's and Women's Rights and Protection seminars for local families.
